Surfing the Med

Surfing the Med

Shortly after arriving in Mallorca, and despite feeling (and looking) a little rough after our four day passage from Sardinia, we duly fronted up at the marina office with our passports and paperwork. We hadn’t been tested for Corona within the 72 hours prior to our arrival (as stipulated by Spanish regulations), but thankfully were still permitted to enter the country. Our luck was holding. The next day, after a much needed sleep, I was keen to get out and…

‘Ahipara is a well known surfing spot…

…a lot of people surf there. Last year they figured, probably three or four…’ So narrated Bruce Brown in his cult 1960s surf movie ‘The Endless Summer’ (see ‘If you go out at Raglan you get two waves…’). In the movie, the surfers team up with two Kiwi blokes who take them to Ahipara in a piece of motoring history: a classic two-tone Holden FB. I made the same journey from Auckland to Ahipara in a rental Corolla station wagon….

Town and Country Surfboards NZ

Town and Country Surfboards NZ

Keeping it Kiwi When I was in high school, there was a small group of us that were infatuated with surfing. Raglan Museum

Raglan Museum

For the princely sum of two Kiwi dollars (about two Australian dollars, or currently around fifteen US cents), visitors can see displays of literally thousands of Maori artefacts, early colonial history, the districts’ contribution to the two World Wars, and a colourful account of Raglan’s surfing history. Included were some great photos of early model surf chariots. For more on the Raglan…

Performance and practicality

The Nissan Tiida is renowned for both its rugged good-looks and high performance. It has also proved to be a more than capable surf adventure machine. Just look at the way the spacious interior absorbs the 7’1″ Hughes. If you enjoyed this post, you may also like Reducing and Reusing in Raglan, Raglan Museum Know someone who might like this post?

Raglan

Raglan

‘If you go out surfing for the day at Raglan you get two rides; one after breakfast and one after lunch.’ So quipped Bruce Brown in his 1966 surf movie ‘The Endless Summer’ when he visited Raglan, New Zealand. Raglan boasts what is probably the longest left-hand point break on earth, and I must have watched the movie 50 times as a surf-obsessed kid. My sister and I still quote lines from it to this day. When I decided to…
